NASA Funding Plans for Lunar-based Telescope

Plans are to mimic Puerto Rican Arecibo that collapsed last year.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has announced funding for researchers to develop a plan to construct a Lunar Crater Radio Telescope (LCRT) on the far side of Earth’s moon. It is anticipated to be three times the width of Arecibo and, being located on the moon, would provide a view of the universe unhindered by radio and satellite signals from the planet.

NASA is giving the research team $500,000 to create an LCRT design and construction plan, which is expected to be carried out by robots. “It’s very challenging, but it’s something that I think is achievable with present-day technology,” said NASA engineer and team leader Saptarshi Bandyopadhyay.

Some craters on the far side of the moon have already been identified as possible locations for the 2-3 mile wide telescope.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the leaders of NASA as they choose projects that advance the discoveries in space.
  • For the NASA research team putting a design and construction plan together.
